GÖTTINGEN

It was on a Sunday when we entered Göttingen. It was uncannily quiet. Not a shot was fired. People were just like how I was told the French were: celebrating and welcoming us.

I was told to report to the Command Post. When I got there I accompanied a Major to a German Hospital. Here the idea was to go through and interview the wounded soldiers. The place was full. They didn’t have enough beds so the Germans had placed most of the wounded on the floor, in the corridors and just about every place else. Obviously they weren’t wounded in Göttingen; they were brought here from battles elsewhere.

Before the end of the day I was ordered back to my outfit. They still hadn’t moved out. I didn't know if I wasn't doing the interviews properly or what so here was an experience I almost had but didn’t have. This was to be repeated in Leipzig but with better success. I’ll talk about that later.
