RÖTZ

Nothing thrilling, exciting or even humorous happened in Rötz. We had been beating a hurried path southward along the Czeck and Austrian borders. The only significant fray we ran into turned out to be very significant in Schönsee , but, once that was over we were unencumbered all the way to Rötz - which wasn’t much further.

Rötz is near where Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany come together. The rumor had it (one of the rumors anyway) that we were on our way to Austria to free several thousand Allied prisoners of war being held in a German concentration camp just over the border in Austria. Another rumor that we kept hearing was that the war was over. The Captain said, “The war is over when I tell you the war is over and not until.”
